Life at Thomas
Our Inspiring Environment
The Thomas College campus is located on 120 acres of woods and fields along the historic Kennebec River in Waterville, Maine. We are about three hours northeast from Boston, Massachusetts, and Maine’s largest city, Portland, is an hour by car. According to US News, Maine is the safest state in the country, and our college town is an especially welcoming environment. In Waterville, you’ll find the Waterville Opera House, the Redington Museum, community and farmers’ markets, and the Railroad Square Cinema. The downtown district has many excellent restaurants, shopping areas, art galleries, coffee shops, and student-friendly cafés. Plus, when you want to enjoy Maine’s natural beauty, simply step outside your residence hall or classroom and you’ll find yourself on our trail system, which leads to the banks of the scenic Kennebec River.
A Welcoming Family
Thomas College is a close-knit community united by a desire to experience the beauty of our natural surroundings and a vision for how we become the neighbors, employees, entrepreneurs, and leaders of tomorrow. In a typical year, we have about 800 students and 130 employees. In Fall 2022, our students came from 23 states and 13 countries, with 14% students of color and 48% who are first-generation to college.
While the majority of our students live on campus, our commuter students would also agree that it’s a very residential community and an easy place to make new friends. In addition to our five residence halls, we have numerous places on campus for students to hang out. You’ll see students spending time together all over our campus—whether they’re studying in the library, shooting pool in the Student Commons, hanging out on the Quad or grabbing a bite to eat in the Dining Center.
For transfer students intending to live on campus, housing assignments take place after you’ve paid your deposit. You’ll use your onboarding checklist to express interest in upper class living, and Residential Life will do their best to place you in your preferred location.
A Flexible, Guaranteed Education
Here at Thomas College, we offer academic programs across our three schools: the School of Arts and Sciences, the H. Allen Ryan School of Business, and the Peter and Paula Lunder School of Education. No matter what you study, you can expect a personalized and innovative experience. The average class size for 100-level courses is just 17 students, so your professors and peers know you by name.
You will find more than 50 undergraduate degree programs, as well as graduate degree programs and certificates of advanced study. Students interested in earning their bachelor’s degree in three years can choose to pursue an accelerated degree program. Popular areas of study include Business, Criminal Justice, Cybersecurity, and Education—and we’ll accept up to 90 credits toward your bachelor’s degree, as long as you earned a grade of a C or better in the course and it fits within your degree template at Thomas. We also have a one-of-a-kind Guaranteed Job Program and dedicated Professional and Career Development team to ensure that our students find success during and after their studies at Thomas.
Value Beyond the Classroom
At Thomas College, the social aspect of campus life is part of your personal growth—and we want you to enjoy it. We give you incredible opportunities for co-curricular learning, leadership, and fun diversions from your studies so you can quickly feel like a part of our community, discover new interests, and learn what truly matters to you. Our location Waterville offers easy access to a range of landscapes, inviting all sorts of recreation. This is your time to try white water rafting, skiing or snowboarding, disc golf, or hiking. Additionally, we have about 30 student clubs and organizations, as well as intramural sports that are also open to all students. About 45 percent of our students participate in our 19 varsity athletic programs, and we have amazing facilities for our student-athletes and their supporters. Whether or not you’re planning to hit the trail or the turf, you can count on many different ways to enjoy your time outside the classroom while making lasting connections with your peers.
